A practical landlord-approval checklist.
A message from the current tenant is not the same as permission from the person or company that controls the lease.
Confirm authority
Verify the landlord or manager through an independent source such as the property’s official website, public ownership records or the office number on your application materials.
Confirm the transaction
- Is this a sublease, assignment or relet?
- Has written approval been issued, or is it still pending?
- Will the replacement complete screening or sign documents?
- Who receives rent, deposit and fees?
- Can the arrangement renew after the listed end date?
Preserve the record
Keep copies of the primary lease, written approval, new agreement, payment receipts and move-in condition documentation. Redact sensitive identifiers before sharing documents with a directory.
